Raleigh, NC - March 27 2003 - Adrienne Kelly Lumpkin, president of converged communications company Alternate Access®, has been honored by Enterprising Women Magazine as a finalist for the first Enterprising Women of the Year Awards. Lumpkin was the only North Carolina leader recognized.
The awards ceremony was held on Wednesday evening, March 26 at the New York Historical Society in New York City in conjunction with the exhibition Enterprising Women: 250 Years of American Business. Ms. Lumpkin's recognition was bestowed for making great strides in her business, giving back to her community through volunteerism, providing resources, creating programs, role modeling, and aiding other women in their quest as entrepreneurs.
She says, "I am tremendously proud to receive this recognition. In as much as the award is about giving to others as well as succeeding in business, I am humbled and even more committed to make a difference in my community and beyond."
Adrienne Lumpkin is a lifetime member of the National Black MBA Association (NBMBAA), has held leadership positions at the local and national board level, was voted MBA of the Year for her chapter, and won the H. Naylor Fitzhugh Award of Relevance from the national association. Locally, she serves as a member of the Business Advisory Board of Meredith College, the Raleigh Little Theatre Board of Directors and the Ligon Middle School Business Alliance Board.
Ms. Lumpkin is also an 8-year volunteer for Junior Achievement and has served as an interviewer for her alma maters Harvard University and Wesleyan University. She previously served on the board of the Greater Raleigh Chamber of Commerce and the advisory board of the Minority Business Consulting Program associated with the Duke Fuqua School of Business.
She is a member of the Council for Entrepreneurial Development (CED) in RTP and a graduate of CED's FastTrack II program for Entrepreneurs. Ms. Lumpkin is a 8-year member of the National Association of Women Business Owners (NAWBO) and is currently serving as an advisor to the president. In addition, she has garnered numerous awards from local publications and associations, and her company, Alternate Access, has been recognized with Greater Raleigh Chamber of Commerce Pinnacle awards, three North Carolina Tech 50 awards, a finalist award for the Ernst and Young Entrepreneur of the Year, and a Deloitte and Touche Tech 500 Award.
Ms. Lumpkin is also the mother of four, aged 1 year to 22 years. She and her husband reside in Raleigh.
The Enterprising Women of the Year Awards were established by Enterprising Women Magazine in conjunction with Springboard Enterprises and the Women Presidents' Organization, and in partnership with the National Women's Business Council and the Center for Women's Business Research. Awards' applications are open to women of achievement from across the United States.
An inauguration of the Enterprising Women Hall of Fame was held during this year's ceremony. Recognized for outstanding lifetime accomplishments in advancing the growth and development of women's business enterprises were: Susan Phillips Bari, Marilyn Carlson Nelson, Marsha Firestone, Edie Fraser, Sharon Hadary, Hedy Ratner, and Carol Dougal.
