Raleigh, NC - 4 June 2003 - Alternate Access, a converged communications company celebrating ten years in business this year, has successfully received certification through the Women's Business Enterprise National Council (WBENC) and also through the Carolinas Minority Supplier Development Council (CMSDC).

The Women's Business Enterprise National Council, founded in 1997, is the nation's leading advocate of women-owned businesses as suppliers to America's corporations. The WBENC certification for women-owned businesses is one of the most widely recognized and respected certifications in the nation, accepted by more than 500 major corporations across the country and a number of federal and government agencies.

Criteria for WBENC certification includes:

Fifty-one percent ownership by a woman or women.
Proof of effective management of the business (operating position, by-laws, hire-fire and other decision-making role.)
Control of the business as evidenced by signature role on loans, leases and contracts.
US Citizenship or US Resident Alien Status

The Carolinas Minority Supplier Development Council is an affiliate of the National Minority Supplier Development Council and exists to expand business opportunities for minority owned & controlled companies. A minority is defined by the organization as "a citizen of the United States who is BLACK, HISPANIC, NATIVE AMERICAN, ASIAN PACIFIC or ASIAN INDIAN."

A "minority-owned business" is defined as a business owned and controlled by minority individuals with at least (minimum) 51% interest held by minority individuals or, in the case of a publicly-owned business, at least 51% of the stock is owned by one or more minority individuals. One or more minority individuals also control the management and daily business operations.
