Adrienne Kelly Lumpkin is Named Woman Extraordinaire for 2003

Community Leader is Acknowledged for Her Open Mind and Generous Heart

Raleigh, NC - 15 December 2003- Standing front center on the cover of this month's Business Leader Magazine is Adrienne Kelly Lumpkin, one of the Triangle's most recognized and admired entrepreneurs. She is surrounded by nine other amazing women, all recipients of the magazine's second annual Women Extraordinaire honors. In making its selections, Business Leader surveyed a broad cross section of professional women in the Triangle, asking whom among them they most admired and wanted to honor.

An extraordinary list of women emerged, including Adrienne, who is the president of Alternate Access. The other nine are: Leslie Alexandre, President and CEO of the North Carolina Biotechnology Center; Lana Calloway, founder and president of Exhibit Resources; Allyson K. Duncan, judge with the 4th Circuit of the U.S. Court of Appeals; Mary Anne Fox, Chancellor, North Carolina State University; Barbara Lyons Goodmon, Executive Director, A.J. Fletcher Foundation; Elaine F. Marshall, North Carolina's Secretary of State; Joan Myers, president of the North Carolina Electronics and Information Technology Association; Billie Redmond, commercial property executive, Coldwell Banker Commercial Trademark Properties; and Jennifer D. Terry, regional president, RBC Centura.

In 1993, with an MBA from Harvard and 13 years working with Hewlett Packard and IBM in high-tech marketing, Lumpkin and husband Kelly established Alternate Access®, a computer telephony company. Today, Alternate Access is recognized as a leading converged communications companies in the Triangle, with customers around the country in diverse industries.

While building her business, Adrienne has also been the busy mother of four children, now aged 23 years to 21 months old. And she is a tireless community volunteer, serving both on the board and in the trenches of organizations near and dear to her heart -- some of which include the National Association of Women Business Owners (NAWBO), in which she is the incoming president of the Greater Raleigh chapter; the National Black MBA Association, which has twice named her MBA of the Year and recipient of the H. Naylor Fitzhugh Award of Relevance; the Raleigh Little Theatre Board of Directors; the GT Ligon Middle School Business Alliance Board; and the Business Advisory Board of Meredith College.

In the preface to the recipients' bios, Business Leader defined an extraordinary woman as "Inspiring to all she meets, confident and self-motivated, driven to make things happen, empowering to herself and others, determined to accomplish her goals, involved in family, work, and play, thinking outside the box, dedicated to ethics and integrity, accomplished and distinguished, motivated to cross the finish line first, energizing to those around her, humble, passionate, and persevering."

Adrienne Lumpkin quotes Dan Custer as her inspiration, "I shall make of this day, each moment of this day - a heaven on earth. This is my day of opportunity."
